SAN MARCOS (9-05-2017) -- Matt Romero, Palomar's sophomore returning quarterback starter who led the Comets to a season-opening 37-31 victory over Southwestern Saturday night, has been named both SCFA Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week and Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Men's Athlete of the Week for all sports.
Romero passed for 368 yards and 4 touchdowns, ran 15 yards for a fifth TD and tacked on a 2-point conversion pass in leading the Comets past the Jaguars. He connected on his first 9 pass attempts and was 10-for-11 in the first quarter in igniting the Comets to a 13-0 lead entering the second period. He gave the Comets a 37-21 lead in the fourth quarter with his fourth touchdown pass of the night, a 13-yarder to Marquis Williams, and Palomar kept the ball on the ground the rest of the way.
Romero's other TD passes went to Rashad Harper for 2 yards, Johnny Arzola for 28 yards and Nate Johnson for 13 yards. He set up a touchdown with a 39-yard completion to Issiah Aguero down to the 2-yard line and connected with Devin Nilson for a 2-point conversion follwing his touchdown to Arzola.
His 15-yard scoring run put the Comets on top early in the game.
