Doepping, Huey power Palomar past Marauders

SAN MARCOS, CA (2/13/2026) – Taking on its highest-ranked opponent so far this season, the No. 2-ranked Palomar College softball team swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from No. 12 Antelope Valley on Friday with a pair of five-inning run-rule victories.

In Game 1, the Comets and Marauders traded blows through a tight battle for 3½ innings before Palomar took command with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and four runs in the bottom of the fifth to wrap up an 11-3 triumph.

Game 2 was a different story as the host Comets stormed out to a 5-0 first-inning lead and never looked back, adding six more runs in the bottom of the fourth to secure an 11-0 win for Palomar's seventh run-rule victory in as many outings.

Sophomore designated player Lauren Doepping and sophomore first baseman Alexis Huey each added to their season home run totals, with Doepping slugging a round-tripper in each game and Huey adding a two-run blast in Game 2 to give both players four homers for the season.

Sophomore pitcher Kiara Flaviani benefitted from another strong day at the plate by the Comets as she started both ends of the twinbill and picked up two wins to improve her record to 7-0. The right-hander pitched five innings in the opener before adding four innings in the nightcap and combining with Hailey White for Palomar's second shutout of the season.

Doepping drove in three runs by three different fashions in Game 1. She deposited a solo home run to left-center field with one out in the bottom of the third inning, she coaxed a bases-loaded walk during Palomar's three-run rally in the fourth, and she ended the game with an RBI single to right field to score sophomore left fielder Taylor Armstrong and cap a four-run uprising in the bottom of the fifth which brought on the mercy-run rule.

In Game 2, Doepping was issued a base on balls in her first two trips to the plate before lining a two-run laser over the right-field fence in the fourth inning for her fourth home run of the season.

Huey collected five hits and scored five runs in six at-bats for the doubleheader, beginning by igniting a two-run first inning for Palomar in Game 1 with a leadoff triple to right field. Huey scored on a single to center by freshman third baseman Natalie Arendt and went on to draw a walk in the fourth inning and score on a bases-loaded single to left by sophomore center fielder Gisele Gonzalez. In the fifth inning, Huey followed a one-out single by freshman right fielder Kailey Dain with a single before scoring ahead of a two-run double to left by freshman third baseman Ava Alvarez.

Armstrong traded places with Alvarez with an RBI double before Doepping ended the contest with her opposite-field hit.

Gonzalez was 3-for-3 at the plate for the second time in three games, and she added two more hits in Game 2, giving her 10 hits in her last four games. Gonzalez singled home Arendt in the first inning of Game 1 before hitting a double to right-center field in the third and scoring on freshman second baseman Kristina Deal's second single of the contest.

Dain was one of six Comets with multiple hits as she singled twice and scored two runs. Palomar finished with 16 hits, including three doubles, one triple and a home run.

Antelope Valley scored a first-inning run before Armstrong threw out a baserunner at the plate from left to end the inning. The visitors took advantage of two Palomar errors to score an unearned run in the top of the second inning, and the Marauders added a fourth-inning run on a solo home run to close Palomar's lead to 4-3. Garcia prevented any further damage in the fourth when she ended the inning by throwing out an AVC baserunner attempting to steal second base, and Flaviani retired the side on one hit in the fifth.

Flaviani finished with four strikeouts and no walks while allowing two earned runs on eight hits. Flaviani then set the tone for Game 2 when she struck out the side in the first inning en route to combining on a one-hit shutout with White. A leadoff single in the top of the third inning was the only baserunner allowed by Flaviani, who struck out six batters.

White pitched a scoreless fifth inning with one strikeout to secure the win for Palomar.

Huey was 3-for-3 with two singles and a two-run home run to center which capped Palomar's six-run rally in the fourth inning. Huey's homer followed a run-scoring single up the middle by sophomore pinch-hitter Aubrey Thorne for her first hit of the season.

Deal provided her second two-hit game of the day with a two-run single in the first and an RBI single in fourth, and Alvarez chipped in again with a two-run single to right to cap Palomar's five-run rally in the first.

The Comets are scheduled to play their next three games on the road, weather permitting. Palomar is slated to visit Fullerton on Feb. 18 before travelling to Grossmont on Feb. 19 for the first Pacific Coast Athletic Conference contest of the season. A non-conference game at Mt. San Jacinto is set for Feb. 20, and the Comets will return home for a PCAC tilt against Southwestern on Feb. 24 at 3 p.m.
