Flaviani earns 20th win as Comets rout Knights

SAN MARCOS, CA (3/24/2026) – Three pitchers combined for no walks and 11 strikeouts and the batting attack returned to form as Palomar College rolled to a 15-1 softball victory Tuesday over San Diego City College.

The five-inning run-rule win kept the Comets unbeaten in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play and atop the PCAC standings with a 10-0 record. Palomar has a 3½-game lead over San Diego Mesa with five conference games remaining on the schedule.

The state's No. 2-ranked team improved its overall record to 23-1, and starting pitcher Kiara Flaviani became a 20-game winner after combining with Gianna Burgin and Haley White to limit San Diego City to one run on five hits.

Flaviani pitched the first two innings, allowing a solo home run with two out in the top of the first inning which allowed the Knights to briefly take a 1-0 lead. Flaviani struck out the side in the opening frame and added two more strikeouts in the second inning before the sophomore right-hander yielded to Gianna Burgin to start the third.

Burgin, a freshman right-hander, allowed a leadoff single and then struck out the next five batters before a flyout finished off her two-inning relief stint. Sophomore right-hander Haley White pitched the fifth inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout. The three pitchers were also supported by errorless defense.

The Palomar offense responded to its early 1-0 deficit by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, which sophomore first baseman Alexis Huey led off with a single to left field. An RBI double to center field by freshman designated player Emma Schneider and a two-run single up the middle by sophomore left fielder Taylor Armstrong were the big hits of the opening-inning rally.

The hosts then sent 15 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring nine runs on seven hits with the help of San Diego City's only error of the game. A leadoff walk to sophomore shortstop Nalia Nuanez and a triple to right by Huey ignited the outburst, which also included run-scoring doubles by freshman right fielder Kailey Dain and Armstrong.

Freshman catcher Delaney Smith added a two-run triple to right-center field, and sophomore Lauren Doepping capped the rally with a two-run, pinch-hit double to left-center field. Palomar added single runs in the third and fourth innings as San Diego City fell to 7-21 overall and 1-8 in the PCAC.

The Comets finished with 17 hits, with six players providing two hits apiece. Armstrong drove in three runs with her single and double, and Smith also had three RBIs with her triple and a third-inning single after she moved from behind the plate to center field on defense.

Palomar has a nonconference road game March 25 at No. 8 El Camino starting at 1 p.m. The Comets return to PCAC competition March 31 with a road contest at Grossmont at 3 p.m., and Palomar's next home game will be a nonconference matchup against Orange Coast on April 1 at 2 p.m.
